I like a stand alone GPS but at some point I'll probably just use my phone like my kids do. I don't see any reason it needs to work that way. I don't think it's right for Garmin to have a map updating process than can ruin the device. One of the things I lost with the 765 failure is the lifetime maps it had. I think I'll try that for the next update of the 885t. I like that idea to load the map on the SD card. But it is fast enough to stream movies in HD. It might work better if I had a faster internet connection. I do not believe it is a very good program. I usually have to try Garmin Express multiple times. I don't think that was the reason the 885 took two tries.

But I used the same one for both devices. I guess I can look around for another cable. I was charging the nuvi which was fully charged at the start of the process. I don't know exactly what happened to my 765 but it wasn't a low battery. It had plenty of power and completed the map upgrade earlier. Garmin express appears to have bricked it. I will let it sit over night with usb charging but I'm not really confident it's even charging at this point, it's totally black no power, even with usb plugged into power. Then it went totally black and can't power on at all, even when plugged into usb. I tried to plug it back into Ian, would not be recognized by computer. I tried reset by holding bottom right of display while turning on, it went to calibration mode but still would not get past "loading maps". I tried turning it off and on several times, same result. I attempted to disconnect usb and restart the nuvi. It completed successfully and all was done. It updated the firmware quickly and then took several hours to download the latest maps. Garmon express recommended I update both firmware and maps, I said ok. I hadn't updated my nuvi 765 in a long time.
